Autumn Term Learning 2022

 

Autumn 1 - 'Where We Live'  Key Questions:

Who lives with me at home?

What is it like in Leicester?

Is everywhere like Leicester?

In English we are learning to use our phonics sounds to spell short words and start writing sentences. 

In Maths, we are using numbers 0 to 10 and representing them in different ways.  We are comparing bigger/smaller or more/less.  We are putting numbers in the right order.

In Science we are exploring different kinds of materials and sorting out objects according to what they are made of.  We are studying the changes that happen during autumn and learning about the parts of a tree.  

In PE we are practising our fundamental movement skills such as skipping, galloping, side-stepping, hopping and balancing.

 

Autumn 2 - 'Whatever the Weather' Key Questions:

What different kinds of weather are there?

How does the weather change in Autumn?

What are the 4 countries of the UK?  What might the weather be like there?

In English we are beginning to compose our own sentences and write short narratives.

In Maths, we are beginning to add and subtract numbers 0 to 10 e.g. 7 + 2 = 9   10 - 4 = 6

In Science we are identifying and naming deciduous and evergreen trees.  We are learning about the main parts of a flowering plant. We are carrying out simple tests.

In PE we are practising our fundamental movement skills such as jumping in different ways and seated balances.

Spring Term Learning 2022

 

Spring 1 – ‘People Who Help Us?’  Key Questions:

Who helps me at home?

In English we are learning to use our phonics sounds to spell short words and start writing sentences. We are also learning to use conjunctions like: ‘and’, ‘because’, ‘when’ and ‘so’ to extend sentences. We are beginning to re-tell stories by creating a story plan to help us.

 

In maths, we are progressing to recognising and using numbers from 1-20.

We are beginning to ‘partition’ ‘teen’ numbers into tens and ones.

We are ordering numbers from smallest to largest.

We are also using number tracks and number lines to help us add and subtract numbers.

We are learning what it is to ‘double’ numbers, up to double 10, and to learn these doubles.

 

In history, we will be learning about individuals from the past, such as Grace Darling and Florence Nightingale. We will be learning about what they did and how their actions may have changed the way we live today.

 

In design and technology, we are learning to create stable structures out of paper and cardboard. We will research different products, design products to a brief, learn to use skills in order to cut, fix and strengthen materials. We will also be manufacturing our own designs, choosing appropriate materials and tools to use.

 

In science, we are identifying the parts of the human body and how we use these body parts to help us use our 5 senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch/feel.

 

In computing, we are learning to login to the school chromebooks. We are learning to create digital art using paint programs/apps by using shape, brush and text tools, as well as choosing colours from a palette.

 

In RE, we are learning about special places. We are identifying places that are special to us and to other religious groups.

 

In PE, we are practising our fundamental movement skills such as skipping, galloping, side-stepping, hopping and balancing. We are also beginning our dance curriculum.

Spring 2 – ‘Animals and Friends’  Key Questions:

In English we are:

  • learning to use our phonics sounds more independently and extend our sentences.
  • re-telling stories by creating a story plan to help us.
  • learning how to use capital letters for names and places.
  • beginning to use more adjectives in our descriptions.

 

In maths, we are using numbers from 1-20 and practicing subtraction by taking away objects or counting back on a number line.  We are:

  • using part-whole models to help us find missing parts and identify number families.  
  • counting to 50 forwards and backwards.
  • learning how 2-digit numbers are made of tens and ones.
  • partitioning and combining 2-digit numbers.

 

In geography lessons we are identifying hot and cold regions of the world and discussing animals that live in those places.

We will learn about compass directions and drawing our own maps of our school.

 

In science, we are identifying the structure of different animal bodies and discussing if they are reptiles, birds, mammals, amphibians, fish or insects.  We will find out about animal diets and decide if they are carnivores, omnivores or herbivores.  

 

In RE, we are learning about Ramadan and Easter and how they are similar/different.

 

In PE, we are working with a partner on our balance skills and learning how to play and adapt games. 

Summer 1 Beasts, Bugs and Beetles

English

We are learning:

  • how to write questions and use question marks.
  • the difference between statements and questions.
  • how non-fiction is different to fiction.
  • how to write descriptions using appropriate adjectives.

 

Maths

We are learning:

  • to add tens and ones up to 50.  e.g. 30 + 7 = 37
  • to compare and measure lengths to the nearest centimetre and use vocabulary such as longer, shorter, tallest, smallest.
  • to compare and measure mass and use vocabulary such as heavier, lighter, heaviest, lightest, equal, balanced.
  • to count in twos, fives and tens and make equal groups.
  • to double numbers up to 20
  • to share out objects into equal groups

 

Computing

We are learning about Beebots and how they are controlled with commands.  We will create simple algorithms and debug them.  

 

Design and Technology

We will be tasting various types of fruit and then developing our cutting skills in order to prepare a fruit salad.

We will learn about healthy eating and being hygienic and safe in the kitchen.

 

Science

We are learning:

  • how to identify and classify dinosaurs according to their diets (carnivore, omnivore, herbivore)
  • about signs of spring.
  • to name parts of minibeasts' bodies and how to sort them accordingly.
  • to observe minibeasts around our school.

 

RE

We will learn how Muslims celebrate Eid.

 

PE

We will be improving our throwing and catching skills by sending and receiving a ball accurately.  we will try to improve our reaction times by catching a ball before it can bounce twice. We will by looking at different types of dance and thinking about moving to different types of music.
